About the Artist

With two decades of professional experience, Nanette Fluhr has created paintings that hang in private and public collections worldwide, garnering her prestigious recognition. Her Portrait of My Grandfather placed among the top ten winners after consideration of 2,300 entries in the premier competition sponsored by Artist’s Magazine. The following year she again placed among the finalists. In the 99th annual exhibition of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, she received the esteemed Martin F. Weber Award; in its 100th, her portrait Phyllis was exhibited. The Independent Art Society and the Suburban Art League have honored Nanette with their Awards of Excellence for two consecutive years. The Art Renewal Center placed her as a finalist in its 2010/2011 and 2013/2014 International Salon. In her most recent endeavor, three of Nanette's paintings have been selected to represent contemporary American realism in a six-city national museum tour of China.

Her work has been featured in a multitude exhibitions, including many in the New York City area. These venues include The National Arts Club, The Salmagundi Club, The Lever House, and The School of Visual Arts. On Long Island, her work has been exhibited at The Art League of Nassau County, The Art League of Long Island, The Hersh Fine Art, The Huntington Arts Council, and The Hutchins Gallery at C.W. Post College. Her work has also been displayed at The Hudson Valley Art Association in New York State, The University of Connecticut Gallery in Stamford, CT, The Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio, and most recently, The Beijing World Art Museum in China.

Nanette graduated from Rutgers University in 1987 and then went on to earn her BFA with Honors from The School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she received the Rhodes Family Award for Outstanding Achievement. There she met John Frederick Murray, who taught her drawing, painting and picture making skills gleaned from the techniques of the Old Masters. Mr. Murray became her mentor, and under his tutelage she painted museum-quality replicas of works by Rembrandt, Velazquez, Van Dyke, Rubens, Lawrence and LeBrun while she was a registered copyist with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

As a faculty member of both the The Teaching Studios of Art and the Art League of Long Island, Nanette shares her extensive knowledge of traditional realism with the next generation. She currently conducts a Master Copying class at the former, and a portraiture class at the latter.

In a video produced at the Metropolitan Museum of Art featuring her Master Copies, Nanette discussed her experience as a copyist. She has also been featured in a special Workshop Issue of American Artists Magazine devoted to the benefits of Master Copies.

She lives on Long Island in Dix Hills, New York.
