About the Artist

Long time artist, teacher and resident of Bucks County, Pa, Barbara Lewis trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and at Studio Incamminati, both in Philadelphia.  Studio Incamminati was established by the world-renowned portrait artist, Nelson Shanks, to teach this generation of artists the tried and true methods of classical painting. Out of favor for decades, classical training in drawing and painting are making a resurgence, and Barbara promotes this in her own teaching.  "It takes years of drawing and painting from life to develop artistic strengths.  One  has to learn to see nuances in value and color, to handle proportion, composition and perspective, before one can accurately and expressively paint."

Barbara's career is a life long journey of exploration, learning and development, inspired by the great work of so many painters before her. Working mainly in oil, she shows a painterly realism in her landscapes, still lifes and portraits.  Her work has been exhibited in the James A. Michener Art Museum, the Pennsylvania State Museum, Woodmere Museum, Rowen University, the Princeton Theological Seminary, the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club, and many other galleries and private collections.  She is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of American, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, the Philadelphia Sketch Club and a fellow of the American Artists Professional League.
